St. Louis to Phoenix, 1988 / Relo Rating: 3
The rare franchise where ownership got rich from the sport itself—starting nearly a century ago—the Cardinals have for almost as long been a model of what not to do when it comes to PR and community relations. That shortcoming—together with tight purse strings, inconsistent drafting and mediocre teams—has led the franchise on a long journey in search of lucre and love, from Chicago to St. Louis to Arizona. They were barely missed in the first two cities, and while a Super Bowl appearance and new stadium have given the team a boost in Arizona, the halos from both are fading fast. Fast enough, in fact, so that every once in a while it’s the Big Red who are rumored to be heading to LA.
