The Hawaiian pizza (pineapple and ham) wasn’t created by a Hawaiian, nor anywhere near Hawaii. Instead, Sam Panopoulos, a native of Greece, claims that he came up with the idea in 1962—when the tiki trend was big in pop culture—as a novelty to attract customers to the restaurant he was running in Ontario, Canada. Since then, restaurants have tried all sorts of ethnic pizzas—Mexican, Thai, Cuban, and so on—as well as other quirky twists on pizza, like the “pizzert” (dessert pizza).
