In January 2009, each “threw in a hundred bucks” to buy the domain name for Column Five Media (which doesn’t mean anything, “we just liked how it sounds,” says Crooks). They shut down their clothing companies and, for three months, worked out of their homes and coffee shops, educating clients about content creation and expanding their design portfolio. When it became clear that the business had potential, they moved into a small office space. “That’s when things really took off,” says Crooks.
By the end of 2010, they moved into a larger space, and took on three employees along with some notable clients, including Intuit, Sony, and Travelocity, which commissioned the image shown here. Now they’re gearing up for yet another move, this time to a 5,000-square-foot space to accommodate their growing staff.
