Like Aldi, discount grocer Save-A-Lot keeps the selection limited as a way to maintain lower prices. For instance, instead of stocking shelves with dozens and dozens of mustards like most supermarkets, Save-A-Lot has just two options: yellow and brown. And like Aldi, Save-A-Lot’s gambit—smaller stores, limited selection, and fewer brand names as the tradeoffs for cheaper prices—seems to be paying off. Plans are in the works for Save-A-Lot to double its number of U.S. locations, from 1,200 to 2,400 over the next five years.
