The sales pitch from DVD rental kiosk operator Redbox is simple: one movie, one night, one buck. Nowadays, when a single movie ticket often costs over $12, a night’s entertainment for a mere $1 qualifies as a true bargain. Along with video game ($2 nightly) and Blu-ray DVD rentals ($1.50 nightly), Redbox’s core $1-per-night DVD rentals have drawn enough customers to allow for amazing growth. There are currently somewhere north of 27,800 Redbox locations, up from 22,400 in early 2010 and 6,700 in 2008. Without question, Redbox dominates the DVD kiosk rental market, and overall spending at in the category rose nearly 40% in the first half of 2011.
