Think of Five Below as a dollar store, only instead of everything being priced at a buck, the items sell for $5 or less. (Hence, the name.) The chain, which got its start in 2002 and sells everything from backpacks to video games to home furnishings, has been multiplying all over the country. It recently celebrated four new grand openings during a single weekend, and 10 Five Belows opened on the same day in the Chicago area last spring. By year’s end there will be 16 Five Below locations in the Second City area, and the retailer sees the potential for 60 more stores in the region in the future.
