Republican Senate candidate Pete Hoekstra hit all the wrong notes with this campaign ad aired in Michigan during the 2012 Super Bowl. Racist? Yes, as the ad basically takes several Asian stereotypes and throws them in a blender (the rice fields, the background music, the Asian woman’s broken English). Xenophobic? Of course, as it tries to scare voters into believing Hoekstra’s opponent is somehow going to let the evil Chinese take all of America’s money. Corny? Shamefully so. For the commercial’s punchline, Hoekstra changes his opponent’s last name from Stabenow to SpendItNow. Unsurprisingly, Hoekstra lost his Senate bid by a wide margin.
