Highlighted as a foodie trend for years, the fancy artisan donut seems to have it its stride—or perhaps gone a bit overboard—in 2012. A Smart Money story pointed out that it’s become common for restaurant menus to feature donuts in the $5 range, which is somewhat absurd considering that there wasn’t a donut in the land that cost more than $1 a few years ago. The most decadently popular and priciest of all is the much-hyped $11 foie gras donut, created and served, of course, in Brooklyn.
