First, the Wall Street Journal published a story on how more upscale restaurants around the country are dedicating special outdoors spaces for diners with pets, and have even created special menus for dogs: “anything from lamb stir fry to meat loaf to scrambled eggs with bacon bits.” Then Businessweek ran a profile of Freshpet, a company whose pricey pet foods—including a newly introduced line of cookies, ice cream, yogurts, and turkey bacon for cats—are always fresh and must be refrigerated. While refrigerated pet food only accounts for 1% of the pet foods market right now, analysts expect the niche to grow by 25% annually over the next few years, as pets have increasingly grown to be considered a part of the family in American households. As such, they deserve the very best.
