In print ads for its shaving products, Nivea depicted a clean-shaven African-American man with a short hairdo holding an afro’ed, bearded version of his head in his hand alongside copy that read, “Re-civilize yourself.” Questlove, drummer for The Roots, was one of many people that took to social media sites to express their displeasure with the implication that people who wear afros are uncivilized.
