The history of Seeds of Change dates back to 1989, when a group of gardeners in New Mexico began collecting and selling heirloom, traditional, and rare organically grown seeds. The company has since expanded into producing pastas, salad dressings, salsas, and grains, yet still supports agriculture, sending 1% of net sales to sustainable organic farming initiatives around the globe. Mars, Inc., owner of major food brands such as Uncle Ben’s rice, Wrigley gum, and candies including Milky Way, Snickers, M&Ms, Twix, and, of course, Mars, purchased Seeds of Change in 1997 and angered the original farm’s workers by shifting operations to Los Angeles in 2010.
