An appeals court in the U.S. has ruled in BP’s favor in a dispute over the terms of its Gulf of Mexico oil spill settlement. The U.S. Court of Appeals ordered a review of the deal on Wednesday, based on the oil giant’s assertion that a judge’s interpretation of the agreement could cost the company billions of dollars in phony or inflated compensation claims.

The court sent the case back to the trial judge who ruled on the dispute in March and ordered him to stop some payments until he can determine which claims are legitimate.
