Remember when you would call Moviefone to find the next showing of Titanic or Forrest Gump? Now there’s an app for that.
The popular dial-in movie listing and ticketing service is hanging up forever, according to a depressing recording that plays when you call 777-FILM. After the famous “Hello, and welcome to MovieFone!” another voice says, “777 film numbers will no longer be in service in the near future.” Instead, users are directed to download a Moviefone app that has movie listing and ticket purchasing options.
In the 1990s, Moviefone got as many as 3 million calls a week, which made AOL buy the company for $388 million. It was so popular there was even a whole subplot of Seinfeld devoted to the Moviefone man.
