The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above the 16,000 mark for the first time Thursday amid indications of an improving overall economy.

The Dow Jones was up 109.17 points, or 0.69%, to 16009.99 at the end of trading. The S&P and NASDAQ were both also up.

Applications for unemployment benefits fell to the lowest in almost two months, the Labor Department said Thursday in a sign that the job market may be improving.
