Google has confirmed reports it is investing $80 million in six solar facilities being built by Recurrent Energy in California and Arizona. The purchase is part of a $400 million deal with investment firm KKR, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The plants are expected to be operational by January 2014, and will have a combined capacity of 106 MW, or enough to power more than 17,000 homes in the U.S., according to the tech giant.

Google has pumped more than $1 billion into clean energy projects, from wind farms to powering its own data centers.
