Tesla has teamed up with Panasonic in order to boost battery production for a greater number of electric cars coming off the production line.

Company representatives stated that the battery cells, designed for high performance and longevity, are crucial if the Model S sedan is to live up to its advertised 265-mile range, Wall Street Journal reports.

The Model S has drawn attention recently for two accidents resulting in fires in the batteries, which have been particularly hard to put out.

Except for the Model S, the new batteries will be used in the performance SUV Model X, which is expected to reach production lines by the end of 2014.
