When Norwegian authorities tested ground beef during Europe’s horse meat scandal earlier this month, they found that products from two manufacturers were loaded with pork, as much as 30% by volume. Aside from the misidentification, the bigger problem is that the meat was labeled halal for Muslim diners. (Eating pork is forbidden in the Islamic religion.) The suppliers apologized, but the Norwegian Food Safety Authority opened an investigation into one of them anyway, telling media outlet AFP, “We don’t believe it’s an accident but it is in fact fraud.”
