Thanks to the internet, it’s easier than ever to keep an eye on your competitors. All it takes is a few simple steps.

Set up Google Alerts so you’ll know any time your competitor is mentioned online, be it in a news article, press release, blog post or discussion, according to Janine Popick, CEO and founder of online marketing company VerticalResponse. And while you’re at it, set up alerts to monitor mentions of your own company so you’ll be ready to jump in and respond if necessary.

Follow your competitors on Twitter, like them on Facebook and connect with them on LinkedIn. That way you’ll be able to follow them and see how they interact with customers and what specials they offer.

And sign up for their newsletters, request a free sample or make a small purchase so you see their communications with customers and prospects.

It’s all useful information, and worth the few minutes it takes to acquire it.
