As a small business owner or manager, you have the ability to set the tone for your whole organization, so you want to be sure your employees are as happy and as productive as they can be.

Here are some tips on how to become a better boss, courtesy of McKinseyQuarterly.com and http://www.nbpjobs.org.

Develop employees, don’t direct them. Barking at employees only goes so far; you need to cultivate talent for long-term success.

Deal with problems head on. They only get bigger if you ignore them.

Be a team player. Celebrate the accomplishments of others and the achievement of team goals; your personal gain should come second.

Learn to delegate. Plot a strong strategic path – and then trust your employees to achieve it.

Be decisive (but not unreasonable). Constantly shifting directives accomplish nothing, so see important initiatives through to completion.

Show interest in your employees’ lives. A little personal knowledge goes a long way.
