A Seattle-based blogger who goes by the handle “Rex” was upset a few years ago when he found out his pricey MacBook Pro contained a defective chip. He was even more upset when the chip eventually fried and Apple reneged on an earlier pledge to fix it. After correspondence with the Better Business Bureau and Apple’s corporate headquarters got him nowhere, Rex filed a small-claims suit against the computer giant and got his day in court last month.
Luckily, Rex was a pretty tech-savvy guy, so he was able to do a good job representing himself, even though Apple sent two lawyers to argue that the company had no responsibility to fix the laptop. The judge sided with Rex and awarded him “compensation for the machine itself, plus court costs, costs of service, etc.,” he wrote on his blog, where he chronicled the whole ordeal. Apple had no comment when TIME Moneyland contacted the company for an earlier story about the case.
