It’s hard to pin down one specific moment when populist anger at the financial services industry began to overflow, but it’s likely Jake DeSantis had something to do with it. In a resignation letter published in the Op-Ed section of the New York Times three years ago, the former executive vice president of insurance giant A.I.G.’s financial services division vented his spleen. He complained that he wasn’t personally responsible for the implosion of his former employer and said he was “betrayed” and “unfairly persecuted” when his salary was cut and bonus was slashed — to around $740,000.
