The most tantalizing rumor to come out of SXSW appeared Sunday night when Reuters blogger Felix Salmon recorded a video saying that “a little bird” told him CNN was “going to announce an acquisition” of popular tech blog Mashable for “upwards of $200 million.” The New York Times quickly followed up, citing three sources who claimed that CNN was in “advanced talks” to buy the nearly-seven-year-old website (CNN is owned by Time Warner, TIME‘s parent company). CNN and Mashable both denied that a deal was imminent. Batting cleanup, The Wall Street Journal confirmed that talks are underway, but poured cold water on the $200 million figure and said the deal could still fall apart. In other words, it’s a big ol’ game of media blogosphere “telephone.” Stay tuned. A deal could happen any day. Or not.
