One of the most successful magazine launches in history when it debuted in 2000, O remains one of the largest magazine in the U.S. In expanding from TV to print, it should be noted, Winfrey followed the earlier path of Martha Stewart. But the latter’s style-based niche was already well-defined, while Winfrey’s television persona was not as obviously translatable to print. What, critics asked, would O be about? (Turns out it was about living your best possible life, of course!) To understand the scope of Ms. Winfrey’s achievement in media crossover, one need only look at McCall’s magazine, which in 2000 was renamed Rosie after its new editorial director, TV talk show star Rosie O’Donnell. Rosie folded in 2002.
