Walmart Extends 10¢ Discount on Gas Through the Winter Shopping Season

Over the summer, while gas prices remained stubbornly high, Walmart introduced a new promotion aimed to lessen the financial burden of driving to, well, Walmart, among other places. The promotion, which knocked a dime off the price of a gallon of gas, was supposed to expire at the end of September. But now Walmart’s extended the offer through December 24.

Walmart recently announced that its original 90-day “Rollback” on the price of gas would continue through to Christmas Eve. The same rules and restrictions apply: Customers in the 18 participating states get a 10¢ per gallon discount when paying for gas at a Walmart of Murphy USA gas station (scout out locations here) with a Walmart gift card, Walmart MoneyCard, or Walmart credit card. The discount is processed automatically right at the pump—no need to wait for a refund or rebate.

Why would Walmart extend the discount, even as all gas prices get cheaper, and therefore consumers aren’t quite as desperate for a break at the pumps? Well, duh, the discounted gas promotion has obviously proven successful at getting shoppers to visit Walmart stores—and the rapidly approaching winter shopping season is the time of year when Walmart wants to attract shoppers more so than ever.
