Charles Town (pop. 5,000) was founded in 1786 by Charles Washington, who was the younger brother of George Washington. It is within commuting distance of Washington, D.C., and has both a horse race track and casino. The big event each year is the Charles Town Heritage Festival, which will be held this year on Sept. 16-18. Another town highlight is a family-friendly version of the John Brown execution that is performed every five years on the anniversary of Brown’s death.
