The meal is comprised of meat, fish and root vegetables. So why the high cost? You should see what it comes in.

Takashimaya Co., a Japanese department store, is celebrating its 180th birthday by selling what’s probably the most decadent boxed meal ever. The meal is known as “osechi,” and Takashimaya’s version will sell for 18 million yen (almost $230,000). While the fine food will come from some of the finest Japanese restaurants, the price tag is staggering thanks to the three-tier, 18-carat, 3.3-kilogram gold box that the meal will be sold in.

A Takashimaya spokesperson said it was the most expensive osechi meal they’ve ever sold. While generally priced at a few hundred dollars, last year’s Takashimaya meal was only about $800. A steal!

And as the price of gold continues to rise, the finely designed box is wildly expensive. According to The Wall Street Journal, 3,300 grams of spot gold (roughly the weight of the box) is worth close to $170,000.

If you’re planning on buying one, be ready in October when Takashimaya starts accepting orders. But it appears only three sets will be made. So if you opt instead for the plastic 2012 sunglasses and a cardboard horn to ring in the New Year, we understand.
