For a medium-sized dog, you’re looking at roughly $1,600 in the first year.

A Consumer Reports post offers some resources for figuring out just how much it costs to own various pets. The ASPCA has an interactive cost estimator that reveals expected expenses for owning a rabbit, fish, cat, “small mammal,” and other pets. As you might guess, a large dog costs less than a medium-sized dog, which in turn costs less than a small dog.
