Not only has the website been profitable since June, but Groupon—which announces specially discounted daily offers on everything from massages to bike tours in certain U.S. cities—has raised $30 million and wants to expand its bulk-buying collective to 50 more cities next year.
Chief Savings Officer. Who knew that such a job title existed? Every household—and every government office, for that matter—should have one or more of these people, whose job it is to see that money is saved whenever possible, and spent efficiently when purchases are necessary.
Call it the incredible bulk: An increasing number of websites are offering discounts for everything from groceries to salon services to flower bouquets, but only if shoppers team up and opt into the promotion in bulk. If too few people sign on, no one gets the deal.
There is power in numbers. A number of new websites are helping consumers meet up and combine their purchasing strength when dealing with retailers, who are happy to unload the goods at big discounts—so long as the goods are being unloaded in large quantities.
