Will Yelp help?

Yahoo is partnering up with the online review site Yelp to incorporate new listings in its search engine, a person who attended a Yahoo employee meeting Friday told the Wall Street Journal. The plan was unveiled by CEO Marissa Mayer, who tried to acquire Yelp for $500 million in 2009 when she led search at Google.

Yelp listings and reviews of local businesses will be part of the search engine’s results beginning in the next few weeks.

The terms of the deal and how it might affect your average Yahoo search haven’t yet been revealed, and Yahoo has declined to comment publicly on the matter.

The once dominant search giant is looking for new ways to compete with Google and increase its search ad revenue, which increased 8 percent to $461 million in the fourth quarter of 2013. Yahoo accounted for 10.8 percent of the search market in December, compared with Google’s 67.3 percent.
