Four white hunters hunters track a Kenyan runner across the African savanna, drug him and then force him to wear American sneakers. This ad somehow made it from a brainstorming meeting gone horribly awry all the way to the third quarter of the Super Bowl in 1999. The commercial was called both racist and imperialist by viewers. Shoe retailer Just for Feet even ended up suing the advertising agency that created the awful ad. Tone-deaf marketing was the least of Just for Feet’s troubles, though. The company filed for bankruptcy protection that same year and company executives later pled guilty to accounting fraud.
