McDonald’s Customers Not Lovin’ It Any More

Even the new Dollar Menu couldn't prevent disappointing sales for fifth straight quarter

McDonald’s reported disappointing sales Thursday for the fifth straight quarter amid stiff competition from peers like Burger King and Wendy’s.

Global sales fell 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter, the company said Thursday, the second in a row where sales underperformed expectations. Industry estimates compiled by the firm Consensus Metrix had expected a rise of 0.5 percent, Reuters reports.

Severe weather contributed to tempered sales in the United States, according to Reuters, where comparable sales fell 1.4 percent in the fourth quarter even as McDonald’s rolled out the new Dollar Menu & More and new limited-time food and drink options.

Still, the home of the Big Mac reported a net income in the fourth quarter of $1.4 billion, roughly the same as a year earlier, and $5.6 billion on the year, a 2 percent rise from 2012.

I think McDonalds is a White Supremacist conspiracy to kill off the African American population.

As this recession rolls on, I'm not surprised they are down a little

O wow, a whopping .1 percent decrease -- one tenth of one percent. Yep, it proves people don't like them anymore.

Their food get more expensive and the quality goes to the dog and they are surprised?

You get what you pay for. If McDonald's paid their workers better their service would improve. If they don't, customers will just pay a little more for that better service somewhere else.

Their food has always been below par. Are people just picking up on this??

In and out burgers rule the fast food landscape.

Back in the Ray Croc days, if you had a problem at one of the restaurants you could easily find a way to complain and the company would respond quickly, even against franchisees.  I worked at McDonalds when Ray was still alive and if we did any of the stuff that the employees are getting away with today when I worked for the company, we'd have been fired on the spot. Today, employees are lazy and abusive and the young managers don't care at all if you get bad food or a bad experience. No one will go out of their way to help. Today, if you have an issue, just try to find an easy way to complain. They don't care. And they make up excuses why they can't do anything against franchisees.  I was cheated by one restaurant and it took six weeks of hard work to get any resolution.  I had a bad experience at another and the McDonald's rep, when I finally found one, actually lied to me outright in an email trying to get me back into the store and spend money. What's worse, the email accounts they respond to you through don't permit you to respond back. So people are virtually cut off from the company. The company is all about profits now and the Ray Croc days of customer care and satisfaction are long gone. That's why I no longer spend a dime with the company.  Such a sad decline from a once-proud company.

Why would anyone eat at McDonald's?  Do you really know what is in the "food" they sell?

Everyone needs to stop hating on McDonald's. I think they are amazing. Obviously, their food is not good for you. But they have incredible customer service, as far as fast food restaurants go. One of my favorite things is to just get a coffee. In Seattle, thanks to all the competition by cafes, they sell their coffee for around $1, even the large-sized one. And that coffee is goooood!

Consider me a sheep, but I *am* loving it. Even if I'm not a regular customer.

McDonalds needs to get back to basics. Strip the menu down, stop trying to co-opt every chain out there and just focus on making the best McDonalds experience possible every time. Period.

Haven't eaten at this place in years. Nothing to be found there but disgusting, pre-manufactured, chemical-laden garbage masquerading as 'food'.

Make it fresh and make it yourself. Your wallet, taste buds and stomach will thank you.

Remember the movie "Supersize Me!" where the director-actor's liver nearly shut down after consuming Mcs for a month.

I stopped eating McDonalds a long time ago. The service is horrible, the employees are arrogant and can't seem to get an order right and the food is always cold and gross. The last time I got a burger there it was a Big Mac and the meat was still half frozen, the lettuce was brown and the sandwich smelled bad. The french fries were also cold and you could have broken a window with one.

If McDonald's wants to survive, they need to drop the "ghetto" attitude, fire the clowns and go back to really cooking burgers instead of pre-packaged food that they nuke for 10 seconds and throw at you.

Personally, I think they will continue to see a decline in sales and eventually will fade away completely.

@ZacPetit  Maybe they wouldn't spit in your hamburger if they got a pay increase.

@ZacPetit If McD's paid their workers better, our tax dollars wouldn't have to go to supporting them on Federal assistance programs.  They're the Walmart of fast food, paying serf wages and pushing their employees onto public aid.

@HoboRat

Everything is about profits now.

One reason people are so obese is that we have a make-money-and-consume national mentality.

@HoboRat  While I don't disagree with you and agree that the employees of yesterday are not the employees of today, neither are the customers. Hard to keep your best You-Deserve-A-Break-Today face on all day when the customers are obnoxious as well.

@JimTheOwl  $1.4 Billion in profit last quarter.  Whew, thanks for your tips on how to save McDonalds!!

PS:  Describing something as "ghetto" isn't racist at all.  Keep using that...

@JimTheOwl  The service in McD's in Japan is amazing and a lot better quality and fresh ingredients and rarely disappointing, although I only go for cafe....are there maybe 6 times in a year and a half.

@hivemaster @ZacPetit

If they paid their workers much more you would no longer be able to eat your greasy instant cheeseburgers as the thin margin in which they profit after paying rent, utilities, food, taxes (local and federal) as well as paying into insurance as stipulated by federal law, utterly vanishes. I see someone above complaining about higher prices and lower quality. You should feel free to blame a worldwide population increase of nearly 1,000,000,000 people per year for rising commodity prices and then get real. This nation is far too used to cheaply made and imported products reinforcing some kind of false sense of fair value.

@TammyBlakely @JasonCline You ARE getting paid what you're worth.  Supply & demand...anybody can flip hamburgers; most can't hit a 95 mph fastball.  Teachers are plentiful.  Doctors not so much.

@JasonCline  If we were paid for WHAT WE ARE WORTH as you put it! than police and teachers are way UNDER PAID and the professional athletes are WAY OVER PAID for what they do and the same applies for the entertainers WAY OVER PAID!!!

As long as I'm ranting lets touch on unwarranted minimum wage increases via politicians. The market dictates the price of your cheeseburger but as soon as non market forces step in "The Government" and make that change the price you pay will rise. McDonald's is not about to subsidize the governments initiative and eat that cost, they pass it on to you. When the middle class is paid more so that they can then in turn spend more in an inflated economy it amounts to socialism without any practical gain. The hard truth is that we should only be paid what our work is worth and then system can find a base from which to work and stabilize. Trying to force growth is beyond pointless, it's dangerous.
