Marijuana Ads Banned on Facebook and Google

Internet giants won't allow them even in states where pot is legal

Facebook and Google will not let weed sellers advertise on their websites, even if prospective pot patrons are surfing the web in places like Colorado or Washington where marijuana is legal.

GigaOM reported Tuesday that spokespeople for both companies confirmed they were sticking with existing advertising policies, which forbid promotion of drugs, including marijuana.

Geo-targeting technologies allow internet companies to serve ads to users based on their location, but Facebook and Google expressed reservations about extending the service to weed vendors.

The risk of changing the current rules “to allow ads promoting the drug in certain states or countries where it is legal is too high (no pun intended) for us to consider at this time,” Facebook spokesman Tim Rathschmidt told GigaOM by email. Google similarly affirmed its existing policy, which prohibits advertisements for “substances that can alter the function of the brain to induce unnatural euphoria, or alter reality.”

Taylor West, a spokesperson for trade association The Cannibis Industry, expressed frustration about the companies’ refusal to allow the ads. “It’s pretty ridiculous and short-sighted – not to mention hypocritical – for them to leave those legitimate ad dollars on the table,” he said.

Both Google and Facebook said they continually review their ad policies and that rules on marijuana could change in the future. For now however, weed sellers will have to look elsewhere to boost their products.

This is so absurd. Not only do they not allow those legal businesses to advertise the sale of a legal product, they also will not allow our magazine to advertise simply because the name is Marijuana Hillbilly. This is a magazine that promotes freedom and freedom only, we entertain, educate and inform. We do not sell marijuana in any form other than the 9 letters that make up the word.

I’ve heard that there are people who abuse their own naughty parts! What kind of society would we have if that were legal?!? There would be people doing that when they’re driving! Their cars would be bouncing up and down like those hydraulic hot rods that are driven by our Country's unregistered guests! I don’t want to see people playing with their privates in public places either!  It makes people go blind! I've known lots of blind people and every one of them abused their own naughty parts before they went blind! If we legalize that then we would have to let people marry their hands for crying out loud! Ooooh, I’m so excited! I asked for my hand in marriage today and it said yes! Where the heck does someone get a wedding dress for their hand?

Mean while we advertise booze, wine, viagra, ambien, with suicidality warnings and all and ever other toxic drug big pharma can dream up. The dark matter of society is fighting against the truth, the marijuana prohibition is a total fabrication of government, based on lies and racism, this is the heart of the marijuana question, can the will and freedom of the people overcome the 'powers that be'? We did it in Colorado and Washington, overcoming the combined efforts of the political class, the cops, the rabid anti pot industry and the media. We did it by direct democracy, by Plebiscite and in so doing have demonstrated a new form of government, direct democracy. The next wave of elections will be determined by marijuana policy. We will carry to victory any candidate willing to support our rigtheous cause.
