This Is What Ford’s All-New 2015 Mustang Really Looks Like

Fifty years after Ford first unveiled the Mustang at the New York World’s Fair, the American automaker is betting a total redesign can make the vehicle appeal to drivers around the world.

TIME got an exclusive look into the sixth-generation Mustang’s development, including these never-before-seen images of the car Ford will formally reveal tomorrow. The vehicle, which will go on sale next year as a 2015 model, is lower, sleeker and wider than the current Mustang. The most notable difference: this is the first Mustang to be produced for foreign markets, as Ford tries to turn an American icon into its global flagship.

Ford executives and engineers told TIME they found themselves straining to satisfy the demands of drivers in Europe and Asia, produce a Mustang with right-side steering for the U.K., India and Australia, while retaining the performance American customers expect. At one point the project had to be rebooted because original designs were not meeting these requirements, TIME has learned. That cost Ford millions. The new Mustang will also have a surprise under the hood: an optional 4-cylinder, turbo-charged engine. It’s a nod to Europe, where gas prices are twice those in the U.S. but also risks undercutting the Mustang’s marketable heritage as a V8 power machine.

Now, by producing a Mustang for sale around the globe, Ford will be extending its strategy of building so-called world cars that can be sold profitably in a wide array of markets with arguably its most recognizable brand. The full story will be available tomorrow on Time.com and in the 12/16 issue of TIME.

Way to put a SEDAN front end on it. I'm not sure if it looks more like the Taurus or the Fusion. Not even an Aston Martin. The back end too: That slant is ridiculous and looks shortened like Hyundai's sports car. I'm sure it will perform well driving wise and it'll be a very competent, fast car.  However this is NOT a mustang. My wife agrees, which is why instead of this we found her a nice 2014 GT that she is picking up today to replace her 2008. This will be her last.

Slowly Ford is killing every car of theirs that I'd ever want to buy. The Fusion and Escape are now Euro cars as was always the Focus, Fiesta, Cmax,  and Connect. The new Explorer is too small to be useful and also ugly. Just looks like a Flex morphed into a "truck". The Flex is cool if you recognize it for what it is. A station wagon. The Taurus is still nice, but uncompetitive (and cramped interior!) with the 2014 Impala (Which I bought). The Expedition (Which we are getting. May end up with 2014 because of steep discounting) Is getting a nice face lift this year and hopefully won't get destroyed in 2017.

In the end, ford just no longer looks or feels like an American car, and I mean that in the BAD way! They're doing well now, but I predict they will no longer stand out and will often get looked over once these models are no longer "new". Hopefully they'll pull it together by 2020!

Bland styling and execution with no originality in design. College tutors do not inspire originality or design flair these days- and the uninspired team of designers who work at these companies. Only the wheels are interesting. Ford seeems to be paying homage to Hyundai's car styling. Mustang design has lost its way since the early 70's. Even the Mustang 2 had interesting styling features compared with this excuse for a 'new' car.

Ford claims the Mustang V6 gets over 30mpg. This is not true! The 2011 Mustang V6 I had avg. 22mpg.even on highway and long interstate trips it got 24mpg tops! The car sucked, transmission was terrible, rode like a log wagon, too small inside and Ford customer service sucks as well!

I said the hell with it and purchased a 2014 Dodge Challenger R/T. The car is awesome! Rides like a couch, lots of torque and power and is built solid! The challenger looks like a real muscle car use to be.The Mustang and Ford has lost me. Also the 2015 Mustang looks like a joke and I think it's funny! What the hell was Ford thinking on this design? Die hard Mustang owners will say they love the new design but we all now that will be a lie! I'm gonna go drive my R/T...a real car!

The Mustang purest will hate this car. Ford better pray that the overseas market will carry them. I will just keep my 2007 GT thank you. At least until Ford gets their head out of their a$$es...

It seems most who I speak with who do like this new version Mustang own boring 4 door front wheel drive cars and would never buy a Mustang anyway. I guess Ford has not figured out yet they need to build a car that pleases the people who would actually buy it. Congratulations to Ford on ruining an American icon for the sake of 'political correctness'.

My first car as a 16-year-old was a 1998 Mustang GT. For some reason, my initial impression when I see this car is: "Look how sensible I am. I can get get over 30 MPGs in this 'Muscle Car'" I got terrible gas mileage in my 'stang and loved every second I had to work after school just to fill up the tank.

It looks OK but nothing to write home about,IRS? who cares,my oi Bullitt with eat the corners with the best of them so why couldn't it have been an option? My bullet has 69,000 mi and the only reason to buy the new mustang for me is if i need a new car,not because I'm thrilled with the looks, who knows this one may grow on me in time like all the other new mustangs did except the ghea.

Absolutely dreadful! A disaster. What makes this car stand out? Nothing. The Mustang is suppose to be an icon, but this is the worst design since the 4th Generation. What were the designer thinking? Let's design a car that is comparable with most other cars? Horrible. The castrated people who came up with this design and the management who approved it should be fired. Just the other day I saw the Chairman of Ford on the Colbert Report and they talked about the first generation Mustang, while showing a photo of the Green Hornet Shelby prototype. Jesus! Those are the people in Management that we are dealing with today. No bloody idea about cars. Idiotic.

Looks like a fancy Camry...

Why don't they just build the 1964 version today with updated safety features-I'd buy one.

Well it was bound to happen sooner or later.... It got ugly again.  I guess that will push up prices/collectability of 2005-2014 models.  A shame really but that's the way the auto industry works.

It looks like GM hired a staff of people to post negative comments! LOL! This Mustang is one hot car! I think the look is awsome and I'm sure the performance will be great. Great job Ford!

Now that I've seen the reveal on TV I love it even more!  The best looking Mustang in years! I want it in black!

Out of all these cars people keep spouting out the only one I can say looks good is the Challenger. The c7 is fugly as can be. The Camaro is an ugly vauxhall with a face lift. WHile nice to look at in the right trim the 12 and 13 boss, shelby etc. are not shabby but we're doing another fox body 15 years of hell again. Then bam I see this debacle of a car and I wish it were a joke. After all my years of love for the mustang please be a joke!  If this is what you offer us I hope it doesn't sell and Mustang can be retired properly. Not with prancing ponies on it like some twit saw in his lsd induced flashbacks but the P-51 for which it was named! Between this and an Edsel, I'd pick and Edsel. Globilization BS. If I want an European car I'll buy one.

The c7 definately looks thousands of times better. They shouldn't worry about the other markets. They should care about making a car that will sell well in North America

I was waiting for the new 2015 Mustang and am very disappointed . . . I was holding off a year on getting a new Mustang . . . If this is it I will get a 2012 Boss 302 instead . . . much better looking car . . . Ford dropped the ball . . . The Camaro, Challenger, and 2012 Mustang are much better . . . It looks like a fusion . . . In the 80s ford kept th 5.0 in 1987 because they knew nobody would buy a Probe with a Mustang badge . . . This globalization thing is a bad move . . . The Mustang is about INDIVIDUALITY!!!!!! BOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MightyDadMan
MightyDadMan

It's a Fusion. With a Mustang emblem screwed to the front grill.

It's also a debacle.

I sincerely hope all the Europeans and Asians Ford is so worried about buy a lot of them - because - American's sure won't.

It doesn't even have the iconic 'hockey sticks'.

Not the first time you've tried, as others have pointed out. Still remember the 80's when you were trying to pass off a Probe as a Mustang.

What the hell is wrong with you people.

You just drove a stake through the heart of an Iconic American Muscle Car.

And you did it in the name of "globalism".

Congratulations.

Hope it was worth it.

"It’s a nod to Europe, where gas prices are twice those in the U.S. but also risks undercutting the Mustang’s marketable heritage as a V8 power machine."

WRONG. It's a resurgence of the SVO, the TOP OF THE LINE Mustang from 84-86. It was lighter, and more powerful than the V6 and V8 models and is still highly sought after.

It may HELP sell in Europe, but this is far from the first time a turbo-4 has been in a Mustang.

Mixed reviews for sure.. it doesnt look bad but at the same time its nothing really new.  nothing that makes me jump up and go wow.  Ford has typically played it too safe at a time when they should be making huge leaps design wise.  This really looks more like another facelift of the currrent car.  which is odd because it was ford complaining about mustangs slumping sales.  GM/CHEVY did it absolutely rite with the C7 Corvette,  Less is more design wise on the exterior, tons of refinement, shapes and lines that compliment one another not give the appearance of being handmedowns from the parts department.  2015 mustang shouldve been a leap in design not only the exterior but the interior as well. and whereas the stingray has made a HUGE leap with its interior This 2015 mustangs interior is the exact opposite.  looking like a handmedown from a small size truck.  way too busy way too many buttons and circles and no lcd display panels.    Im afriad Ford has truly dropped the ball on 2015 mustang.  The design will age quickly because its more of the same.  at least for us here in the states.  overseas is another story.

My impersonation of the Internet:

"Ugh! Ford, the Mustang looks too much like a Mustang! How dare you!"
"OMFGWTH Ford! How dare you change the Mustang! How dare you!"

At times I do wish aliens would destroy the human race.

The new Mustang will be a winner, and "sell like hotcakes" globally!

After all, Ford is aiming for a global market, which is smart.

Most people saying they do not like this car are not fans of Mustangs to begin with.  Its hard to tell from a still photo exactly how it will look.  I thought the 2005-2009 Mustang only looked good with the hood scoop and the fog lights.  I want to see this model in a video or in person with the optional appearance package.  I owned an 07 GT manual and loved it.  I owed it 5 years and only changed the oi every 5Kl.  I sold it to a dealer for 65% of what I paid for it.  I hated the solid axle and thought it was too heavy but loved the looks, the perfomance and the reliability.

It is a 2 door ford fusion with a V8.  Not bad, but I like the 05 design better

It looks like a 1998 ford Taurus. So round and generic looking.  It doesn't have the strong snout a muscle car needs.  I've gotta say this is a real disappointment.

@tonytonytony  No matter how I look at it my eyes reject it, I hope it looks better in person. This could have been the only Mustang I would consider buying, but now I just dont see it happening.

@Topic_of_Cars

The V8 was a lot faster than the crummy SVO.  THe SVO turbo kicked in all at once and it was like driving a slow 4cyl until it got going a bit.

Soakee

And the 84-86 SVO was also not the first time a turbo-4 was offered in a Mustang.  Go back to 1979.

@xevious2501 100% agreed. it looks like they only made edits to last year's design whereas they should have started from scratch as it seems with the C7. It still does look good; just wish I was looking at a redesign

@dale.dethomas This is exactly right on! I've owned 3 Mustangs over the years and most of these people forget that during most of it's popular life it didn't look retro so get over it! We've had 10 years of that. This car looks fabulous and better than any of the renderings. The independent rear suspension will stop a lot of people complaining about the ride and it's about time. Don't get me wrong there's nothing wrong with the current design except that they've already been doing it for a decade. Time for something new. And for the record I like it better than the Camaro.

@forabogey Bingo - and here in Califronia dealers are no longer discounting the GT's - I do like the 2015 but I also love the 2013 GT I bought last May. The 2013 has that sinster look like the Shelby 500.

@peterb13 I had an 05' ragtop in wind veil blue.  Beautiful car akin to the original in styling.  Those first few years of the new gen were truly gorgeous 05-07'.

@Tiberius

It still looks retro, just mixed with cheep looking fusion type elements.   I had a Mustang LX 5.0 when I was 19, this is still a kids car.
