An Indiana man says he was fired from his job as general manager of a Pizza Hut restaurant for refusing to stay open on Thanksgiving, CNBC reports.

Ton Rohr, who oversees the Pizza Hut in Elkhart, Ind., said he was unexpectedly ordered to stay open, and was fired when he refused.

Pizza Hut did not respond to requests for comment from CNBC.

“They just said it was a competitive decision and that everyone was open, so we will be too,” Rohr said. “I said, ‘Why can’t we be the company that stands up and says we care about our employees, and let them have the day off?’ “

To fight, and try to help our Friends, and Co-workers enjoy a Christian Holiday, with their Families and Friends,  is a very Honorable, and Righteous act of Courage.  But in this case, somewhat foolhardy.

As a Military Veteran, I applaud his Bravery, but also must say he acted without prior approval, and against the wishes of those above him.

For any Company, Corporation, or Military Unit to function correctly, the Chain of Command must always be followed.  This Manager did not follow orders, which causes a breakdown, and chaos  throughout the entire unit.  If he is allowed to do this without punishment, then everyone can decide how they want to do Holidays. CHAOS.

Alright, everyone needs to step back here for a bit and think.  The Manager is an employee of the corporation and has no right to decide whether the business opens or closes on a particular day, if he wants that right, buy the franchise.  Now, not everyone may celebrate Thanksgiving depending on economics or ethnic background.  Did this manager ask the employees if they didn't mind not working today?  Would not working today mean that any of them might not be able to feed their families in a weeks time because of one days less pay?  It's retail and if the manager was was not expecting to be open, he doesn't know retail.  Remember folks that Thanksgiving is being thankful for what you have and for a lot of people, they are thankful to have that job.

Why do we keep seeing Pizza Hut and a few others riding rough shod over employees? Probably because they do not value them. Possibly corporate ego. Both are the reasons I no longer patronize Pizza Hut, and a few other companies that do not value their people, the people that has brought them success. That success can and should go away.

Firing people for refusing to work on Thanksgiving Day -- when American families spend quality time together -- is how some profit-obsessed business owners perceive "traditional family values"

For these self-described "free-market capitalists", patriotism has more to do with GREEN than it does red, white and blue.

This pizza hut GM will have another job by Monday. Pizza hut was hurt far more then he was reference to public relations. The company or franchise owner will not go under but it leaves a bad taste in peoples mouths. Pun intended .

Was it the corporation that owns pizza hut or a franchise owner who did this?

@JakobStagg A workman must first,  be worthy of his hire.  When you accept a job, from a Company, you also accept what the Company wants to pay you, you accept the hours and Holidays, and any or no insurance.

If you don't like what your Company does.......you are Free to quit, and go elsewhere.

This Good Business Decision, means this Company is correctly Managed, and will show a profit for their Stockholders.

@labman57 Then you should buy this Company, and Manage it how you wish......Profit or not.

In this case I would say Money  Talks,.....'BS' Walks.

@CharlesCundiff1 @JakobStagg Allow me to agree with you. However the treatment was akin to the treatment of slaves prior to emancipation. Having seen Pizza Hut's treatment of their employees. Having been told about the treatment by those who manage the stores, Pizza Hut has not deserved the right to survive it's own stupidity.behavior.

This smacks of the same crap that attended the Great Depression. It created an opportunity for those who were not harmed by the economy be be abusive for the sake of being abusive. Nobody, no company or person has earned a right to abuse others.
