Most Men Think It’s OK to Check Texts in Meetings. Most Women Don’t.

Women are less inclined to condone texting during a work meeting, according to a recent nation-wide survey.

Less surprisingly, older people are also more likely to shun the practice, according to the University of California Berkley surveys published Thursday. Here’s a glance at some of the findings, compiled by the Wall Street Journal:

Men were more likely to think checking texts in a meeting was acceptable.

  • 59% of men surveyed considered it acceptable to check text messages during an informal meeting.
  • 34% of women responded similarly.

Men were more likely to think answering a call during a meeting was acceptable.

  • 50% of men surveyed considered answering a call during an informal meeting was appropriate
  • 26% of women responded similarly.

Men were more likely to think texting during a meeting was acceptable.

  • 43% of men surveyed considered texting during an informal meeting okay.
  • 23% of women responded similarly.

Young people were more likely to think reading text messages in a meeting was okay.

  • 80% of people ages 21 – 30 thought reading text messages or emails was acceptable.
  • 33% of people ages 51 – 65 responded similarly.

Young people were more likely to think sending text messages in a meeting was oaky.

  • 66% of people ages 21 – 30 thought sending text messages or emails during an informal meeting was acceptable.
  • 20% of people ages 51 – 65 responded similarly.
