151 Passengers + 0 Working Toilets = 1 More Grounding for Boeing’s Dreamliner

The toilets on a Japan Airlines flight en route to Tokyo ceased to flush mid-flight, forcing the plane to return to Moscow

The launch of Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner, a model of fuel efficiency, has been marred by production delays, glitches, and worst of all a battery fire that forced an international grounding. To top it all off, one plane en route from Moscow to Tokyo had to take a U-turn late Wednesday night, because the toilets on the plane “became unable to be used,” as a spokesman for Japan Airlines delicately put it. To put it less delicately, the toilets wouldn’t flush.

The plane, carrying 151 passengers and crew members and an unspecified number of inoperable toilets, landed in Moscow two hours after take-off. “The device to heat meals also had a problem,” the spokesman added.

This is shameful. However, at least they had think of making a stop by rather than letting their passengers suffer with that scenario. 


Coming on the heels of JAL's historic move to no longer be a Boeing-only airline, the clock is ticking for Boeing CEO McNerney's latest statement of 'confidence'. The stock has soared, even as cracks in Boeing have grown, but this time reality seems to be catching up to their spring PR offensive, as 787 operators sue, or turn away, and passebgers (read up on the Paris incident) refuse to board. Significantly, ANA leadership, burned by the incendiary battery incident PR nightmare and the international grounding of the 787, is disinclined to play launch customer again, according to statements made.by their CEO.

What Boeing pulled off with their lobbyists on Capitol Hill has now caught up with them; having avoided Congressional hearings, they're on trial in the.public marketplace, and PR department methane won't keep 787 sales aloft.
