Is Your Neighborhood Airport on the Decline? This Map Will Tell You

In the game of merger roulette that U.S. airlines have played in the past decade, few stakeholders have lost more than the Cincinnati airport. In 2003, 10.1 million people boarded 211,000 domestic flights departing from CVG. By 2012, nearly three-quarters of that traffic had withered. Last year, that figure was down to 2.8 million passengers.

In the magazine this week, Bill Saporito reports from the dateline “LGA to FLL/MIA TO LAX to JFK” on the ever-constricting circumstances of U.S. airlines. Here, you can see the growth and decline of every major airport in the United States between any two years, using data downloaded in bulk from the Bureau of Transportation statistics. This map covers every domestic commercial flight between 2003 and 2012.

Typically women feel more comfortable potty training their daughters simply because they can relate better to them. In reality, you potty train a boy the exact same way you would a girl – There is no difference.

Could you update the map to make Midway airport more visible?  Maybe a different color than O'hare.

@jujusmith Thanks for the map. I've been wondering how many passengers CVG & PIT have lost in the last 10 years.

This isn't a map of shrinking airports. It's a map of larger, fuller, and more efficient aircraft, and airlines getting better at managing inventory. Traffic is up, but flights and seats down.

@iPublicPolicy - Sure! It's interesting to see where the growth/decline is happening. Some unexpected stats.

@dwallbank @DCMorningCall @chriswilsondc Apparently the map has changed or you can't read. My map shows Alpena at 33,752 pax in 2003 then down to 15,010 in 2012 or a decline of 56% - where did you come up with 125%?

@jujusmith Yes, in Midwest, Delta cut most of its CVG hub, USAir shifted out of PIT b/c of new airport cost, & TWA's hub was STL, AA cut it.
