Campbell’s got a major bump of cool cachet when Andy Warhol painted all of the 32 varieties the company produced at the time. That was back in the 1960s, though, and the times, they are a’changing, as another 60s icon pointed out. Campbell’s has been changing as well. For starters, its soup now comes in pouches, and plain-Jane tomato and chicken noodle have been upgraded to varieties like “Creamy Red Pepper with Smoked Gouda” and “Moroccan Style Chicken with Chickpeas.” The product line even has a new name, Campbell’s Go, which is supposed to appeal to today’s young “on the go” consumers. Americans are eating 13% less canned soup than we did a decade ago, so the company badly needs its new hipster image to heat up sales.
