Cyber Monday–like Deals Kick Off Big Week for Online Retail

“Green Monday” — which is today, Monday, Dec. 10 — may not be the well-known phenomenon that Cyber Monday is. If the deals are as good as Cyber Monday’s, however, that won’t matter.

The vast majority of retailers offer one-day deals for Cyber Monday, and they brand them as such. This isn’t necessarily the case on Green Monday, which is the second Monday in December, and which is so named because it’s traditionally a very big day for online retailers to make green, i.e., money. Some, but not all that many, retailer websites are hosting official Green Monday sales — Walmart, for instance.

Other sites are simply having big sales that are similar to those on Cyber Monday without bothering to mention that Green Monday is the occasion. This may be because stores don’t want to have to explain what the heck Green Monday is.

In any event, below is a sampling of some online specials offered at the beginning of what’s sure to be a huge week for e-commerce. While this week does not necessarily represent the last opportunity for online shoppers to secure free shipping, we’re getting to the point where consumers want to start placing the orders that they absolutely must have in hand before Dec. 25.

Frankly, while some of the deals below are as good as anything we saw on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, many other specials offered today come up short. For example, Abercrombie & Fitch had a 40%-off special on Black Friday but is only knocking off 25% sitewide on Monday. Nonetheless, as the clock is ticking and consumers feel increased pressure to check people off their gift lists, retailers know that shoppers are likely to bite anyway:

Ann Taylor Loft: Extra 50% off sale items, 40% off all full-priced sweaters, T-shirts and blouses; no coupon code required.

Banana Republic, Old Navy, Gap: The sister stores are offering across-the-board discounts on all purchases — 15% off at Old Navy (promo code ONGIFT), 20% off at Gap (GAPGIFT) and 25% off at Banana Republic (BRJOY25).

Converse: 25% off sitewide and free shipping on all orders; no coupon code required.

Levi’s: Use the code MONDAY to take advantage of free shipping on all orders (no minimum purchase) and 40% off sitewide on Monday.

Perry Ellis: In addition to free shipping on all orders placed through December, get 45% off all orders made by Dec. 10; enter code STPECYBER45 at checkout.

Sears: Instead of using the phrase Green Monday, Sears is branding its sale as a “Cyber Monday Rewind.” Hundreds of items are marked down by up to 50%, and shoppers get free shipping and an extra 5% to 20% off when placing an order of $49 or more.

Starbucks: The coffee chain is in the midst of a “12 Days of Gifting” sale, with a new deal rolled out each day. Today, shoppers get 30% off all Starbucks mugs and gift packs.
