The Wholesome Hidden Message of ‘Gangnam Style’

South Korean singer-songwriter Psy poses backstage at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas on Sept. 21, 2012

If you have access to the Internet — and you sort of have to in order to read this — then chances are good that you’ve seen the over-the-top music video for South Korean pop star Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” which has racked up more than 250 million views on YouTube. You may have watched some of the many parodies, like this video combining the song with clips from the film Downfall featuring an apoplectic Adolf Hitler. You may have even tried to teach yourself Psy’s “Gangnam Style” horse dance.

The song is catchy enough, and the video ridiculous enough, that you may not have realized that “Gangnam Style” mixes its silliness with social satire. Gangnam, you see, is Seoul’s richest and flashiest neighborhood, what one commenter describes as the Korean equivalent of “Silicon Valley, Wall Street, Beverly Hills, Manhattan’s Upper East Side and Miami Beach all rolled into one.” The video depicts Psy’s comically inept attempts to live large in Gangnam style, offering a satirical take on South Korea’s burgeoning culture of consumer excess.

The video starts off with Psy luxuriating on a sunny beach, being fanned by a beautiful woman — at least until the camera pulls out to reveal that he’s actually on a children’s playground and the woman is a figment of his imagination.

(MORE: Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ Is the Best Invisible-Horse-Riding Rap Video You’ll See All Week)

Despite his flashy clothes and his preening and strutting, Psy’s Gangnam-style life is distinctly unglamorous: he sweats in a sauna alongside low-ranking gangsters, goes for a swim in a public bathhouse and joins a couple of elderly pensioners playing a board game on a bench underneath a highway overpass. Instead of dancing in an exclusive club, Psy boogies in the aisle of a tourist bus. (Thanks to the blog My Dear Korea for pointing out the cultural significance of various scenes in the video.)

Of course, Psy’s character isn’t the only wannabe Gangnamite in South Korea. As Max Fischer points out in his analysis of the video on TheAtlantic.com, plenty of Koreans are spending like they’re rich:

In 2010, the average household carried credit card debt worth a staggering 155 percent of their disposable income (for comparison, the U.S. average just before the sub-prime crisis was 138 percent). There are nearly five credit cards for every adult. South Koreans have been living on credit since the mid-1990s, first because their country’s amazing growth made borrowing seem safe, and then in the late 1990s when the government encouraged private spending to climb out of the Asian financial crisis.

As satire goes, “Gangnam Style” is fairly gentle, more silly than stinging — perhaps because Psy himself grew up a rich kid in Gangnam.

But in some ways the gentleness — and the relentless cheerfulness — of the video may in the end make it even more of a challenge to the consumer society it satirizes. Psy’s character may be more than a little ridiculous in his aspirations and affectations, but he’s not unhappy. He’s as happy in the children’s playground as he would have been on a beach at an exclusive resort, and he meets the girl of his dreams while riding the subway.

(MORE: Selling ‘Gangnam Style’: Why K-Pop and Commercials Are a Perfect Match)

Perhaps the message of the video isn’t so much that Gangnam-style life is hollow and meaningless but that living large is more about attitude than money. In a society obsessed with money and status and consumer excess, it’s a reminder that the best things in life are free — or at least don’t require maxing out credit cards.

Not EVERYONE despises Gangnam. Gangnam to people outside Gangnam may not be the most favorable place no matter how much they do want to live there, but no, it is not a taboo.BTW, the author did get pretty much the whole picture correct.

This and the Atlantic article completely ignores the fact that the video and the lyrics have nothing in common.  Video is a satire of the rich area in Seoul and the lyrics is about a guy and his dream woman.  Which is gangnam style?  The video or the lyric?

This is a great article! I'm so glad someone out there got the message, instead of just finding it a funny foren song with a crazy dance to it.  <3 Psy!

Hidden message ?

My_arse !!

It was a clear piece of satire, nothing hidden about it.

Gangnam style is sheer genius.

I thought you said "hidden" message.  I was waiting for you to reveal something, but you just talked about what everybody already knows.  Thanks for writing a review about the secret that is so obvious, it's in the title of the song.  Are you next going to write about the "hidden" color in blue skies?

Gangnam Style's catapult to the 9-figure viewerships on YouTube and K-pop star Psy's high rise in the global cultural scene has been scintillating, indeed. But apart from the extraordinary attention and cheer from the global society, the designation of Gangnam (literally south of the Han River) and its mention has been a taboo here in South Korea. You know why? Because the local district and all things that it represents has become the target of the hatred of the liberal political activists who vow to overcome, liquidate, and dismantle it for the welfare and prosperity of the grassroots at large. The woman politician, who is running for the December presidential election living at the Gangnam district, is actually on her downside slope in her ratings. She might envy Psy his skyrocketing popularity.

Not the only Psy video with a message. "Right Now" starts with a salary man stuck in a traffic jam who decides to say the heck with this.

David,

Have you read the translations of Gangnam Style on internet? You've got this song very accurately. Some of the translations miss the heart of the song, namely, as you've alluded, that the best things in life are rather simple and down-to-earth. At first, the parody appears to be about the rich and the driven Gangnam life, a district in Korea where you will find any number of attractive but idle women preoccupied with cares about their looks, their car, their home, in short, their earthly possession. Yet, in the end, the song is also a statement on the kind of woman a real man is looking for, and with her the lasting kind of happiness he is seeking.

Sojeong

ps. Below is my translation. The Korean original and English transliteration are readily available on internet. There are several translations on the web, but I was not exactly happy with any of them, so I made some modifications. Words are trite and, at first, the ideas appear as simple as any pop culture's elevation of "eros."

One of the charms of Psy's words is in its simplicity and the devaluing of all that pop culture promotes, such as girls showing skin, perfect physiques of pop stars, etc. Implied also is the attraction of the minds. By the way, "I've got Gangnam Style" can equally be used as the girl saying "You've got Gangnam Style".

("Opan" is a contraction of "Opa Nun" which means "Opa has/is". Most basically used in sibling relationship, Opa is the title used only by the younger sister addressing her older brother. Outside the sibling situation, it is used when a female addresses a male who is her elder, but never when another title is available, such as "uncle", "father", "grandfather", or "Ajussi (a married older man)". A man never uses this term to another man. Only female can use this term, and only to older male, even if he was born a second before her. So, the very word Opa implies it is about male-female connection. Of course, Psy is using it to imply a love interest, a physical attraction, and not its other use between siblings.)

Sorry, it is not sourgraping. This article is trying to find sense in this phenomenon by analyzing the elements involved: rythmn, symbolism in the lyrics, etc. I do not agree with the conclusion of this article, coming from Asia myself and having lived in South Korea for 5 years but that is another story....

While you may be in "the know" the vast majority of those viewing are not. Even several of the news commentators covering Gangnam Style begin with offhand comments that they "just don't get it."

And those are "journalists". I think the article is timely and well informed. Much more so than other pieces covering the same content.

Please do not over-exaggerate. Not EVERYONE despises Gangnam. Gangnam to people outside Gangnam may not be the most favorable place no matter how much they do want to live there, but no, it is not a taboo. Please do not make comments as if you know every single Korean's opinion. And obviously from your comment, you are bitter yourself that you are not living in Gangnam... or at least you sound like it.

BTW, the author did get pretty much the whole picture correct.
