[...] According to an opinion piece in Time magazine, the new business of music streaming and the way it pays artists is going to result in an increase in overall music quality. This stands in contrast to the opinion of many musicians who feel that the pay-per-track streaming system is screwing them big time. The piece, written by Eliot Van Buskirk, a longtime online music commenter, argues that “in the olden days (i.e. 20 years ago), recording artists had to convince you to fall for their music once—just long enough to buy a CD,” which of course led to the well known practice of padding albums that sell on the strength of a hit or two. With the market shift to per-track sales and royalty payments, it’s now harder to get paid for filler, and because streaming sites pay over and over for song plays, the logic goes that labels have an incentive to invest in the good stuff. Buskirk was so bold as to say that “perhaps there will even be a return to the ‘golden age’ when labels used to spend years or decades developing an artist instead of releasing whatever they think will sell that week.” It seems like a strange argument given that single-track sales seem well suited to flavours of the week, and as far as I know, there isn’t any proof thus far of labels “investing” in artists any more than they used to, but hey, we can hope.
