The castle is located in Great Barrington in the Berkshires, well-known for its cultural focus. Designed by McKim, Mead and White, this stone castle is believed to be the work of Stanford White, who was one of the most important American architects of the 19th century.The home was built in 1888 in the style of a French chateau-style castle. It was commissioned by Mary Hopkins, heir to the Central Pacific Railroad fortune, who even went so far as to tow sunken ships from as far away as Scotland to reclaim their English oak wood. Sited on 64 acres of meadowland, part of the property lies along 1,000 feet of the picturesque Housatonic River. It’s listed by the Matthews Group at $11 million.
