The Oklahoma governor’s mansion has long been a true state resource. The story goes that during the Depression, then-governor “Alfalfa Bill” Murray, known for his love of farming, plowed the grounds and invited the public to plant potatoes in the lawn to help feed their families. The estate has also escaped the financial woes of some governor’s residences, due to an oil strike where “black gold” was found on the actual mansion grounds. For many years, producing rigs sat outside the five-bedroom Dutch Colonial mansion.
