Built in 1979 by potato mogul J.R. Simplot (the supplier of many a spud for McDonald’s french fries), this Mediterranean-style home, with two bedrooms, a library, and two dining rooms, was given to the state in 2004. Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter has a reasonable excuse for not living there — decades ago, he divorced Simplot’s daughter Gay. News reports say that it costs $100,000 per summer to keep up the lawn, and, according to the Idaho Statesman, the not-terribly-old house recently underwent a $260,000 remodel. In February 2011, lawmakers rejected a proposal to sell it.
