“I was born in 1926 and that was a time with all the problems and everything. A lot of the children now and adults don’t realize what we went through. My mother went out and worked. She knit things for the Red Cross and things like that.”

OK, this quote isn’t from the real Santa. Instead, it’s from one of his helpers—an 84-year-old man who has played Santa for 22 years at New York City’s South Street Seaport, interviewed at NPR’s Planet Money blog.

But this Santa seems as wise and generous as the big fella himself.
