“Not only are banks packaging the overdraft ‘service’ in a deceptive way (e.g. Account Protector), they are allowing their employees to sell it to customers whose language or cultural differences make it difficult or impossible to understand.”

The bank branch manager gives the lowdown on why he quit at Consumerist. Faced with an ultimatum—to give customers the hard (and misleading) sell on overdraft services like many banks are doing because of an August 15 deadline—the manager resigned with a clear conscience.

In his note to Consumerist, the former manager advises that if you feel your bank has tried to trick you into opting into an ATM overdraft program, you should file a complaint with your state’s attorney general’s office.
