Scam Trifecta: Fake Tax Refund Schemes, Facebook Gift Card Fraud, and Health Insurance Policies That Don’t Exist

Whodathunkit: A free $1,000 gift card for IKEA is too good to be true.

Three recent scams:

Nearly 40,000 Facebook users tried to snag $1,000 IKEA gift cards, but the offer was really just a way for scammers to collect affiliate fees and get hold of all sorts of user’s personal info.

A number of tax preparers have been accused of trying to collect fake refunds for clients. In something called a “redemption scheme,” for instance, there’s supposed to be secret government accounts that taxpayers can access using certain forms.

And, in all the confusion surrounding health care reform, there’s been a proliferation of fraudulent health insurance offers. Scammers are selling bogus plans via phone, Internet, and by going door to door, often promising affordable policies—but only if you act now due to “limited enrollment.”

Affordable health care? You had to know that’s just too good to be true.
