March Madness: Stocks Are Up 68%

Last March we all thought the world economy—not to mention our cherished lifestyle —was headed for the trash basket. The stock market had plunged, retirement plans were ruined,  and few people cared that equities looked dirt cheap. But here we are one year later and the stock market is up 68%, rampant fear has morphed into uneasy optimism, and healthcare reform has replaced financial reform as the top newsmaker. A few other things have changed, as chief economist/strategist David Rosenberg at Gluskin Sheff notes in his report today. Here are some of Rosenberg’s astute observations, comparing last March to the present:

  • The VIX was 50, not 17
  • The yield on 10-year Treasury notes was 2.9%, not 3.7%
  • The budget deficit was $900 billion, not $1.5 trillion
  • Baa spreads were 540bps and tightening, not 260bps and widening
  • The market was 20% ‘cheap’ as per Shiller P/E ratio, not 25% overvalued
  • The DXY (U.S. Dollar futures) was at 90 and depreciating, not 80 and appreciating
  • Oil was at $47/bbl, not $82
  • Equity PM cash ratios were at 5.5%, not 3.6%
  • Market Vane bullish sentiment was at 32%, not 53%
  • Real GDP was -6.4%, not +5.9%; and the ISM was 36, not 57

Small Dairies Go Under as Milk Prices Sink Again

PLAINFIELD, Vt. — The MacLaren brothers are third-generation dairy farmers, but they will likely be the last in their family.

After working all their lives on the hillside farm in Vermont that their grandfather bought in 1939, rising to milk cows at 3 a.m., even in blizzards and sub-zero temperatures, they decided to call it quits, auctioning off their roughly 200 cows and equipment ranging from stalls and hoof trimmers to tractors and steel pails.

The Term “Pink Collar” Is Silly And Outdated — Let’s Retire It

You can’t throw a stone around the internet today (if that’s even possible?) without running into the New York Times’ new study on so-called “pink-collar jobs.” The report found that over the last decade more and more men have flocked to traditionally female-dominated career fields like nursing and teaching. Fascinatingly, the study disproves the commonly held belief that this transition is the result of the recession, proving that men’s migration into the pink isn’t out of some alleged desperation. Men want those jobs.

    it is so crazy

A 68% rise must have been assumed to be real impressive. However, it is based on the index that dipped down to near 6700 momentarily last year. Nothing much to cheer about.

At around 10500, Dow is still some 40% below its peak. Does that make sense?
