We bailed you out, and you can’t even shovel your $%&*@# sidewalk?!?

This was the sidewalk in front of the Citibank at 96th and Broadway and New York a little after noon on Sunday. The reason I took a picture of it was because, while most of the sidewalks along Broadway were already salted and shoveled and ready for walking after the big Saturday night snowfall, the sidewalks in front of bank branches conspicuously were not. It wasn’t just Citi—Bank of America and Chase were offenders as well. I get that the banks aren’t open on Sunday, but you think they’d be able to hire somebody to shovel.

Or maybe they could just open on Sundays, like TD Bank does:

    …possible reasons….
    1. After bonuses, there wasn’t enough cash to hire a shoveler.
    2. Choice of paying back bailout money or hire a shoveler.
    3. All shovelers are currently busy shoveling …something else.
    4. They did hire shovelers. Alas, they hired the duck kind and they’re all in Vikram Pandit’s office suite eating his giant tubs of multi-flavored holiday popcorn.
    5. To save money, Pandit is shoveling the walks of all Citi branches himself. He’ll get around to that one so stop complaining already.

Justin – THANK YOU! This has been true at Citibank for years. I had a branch in my building at 79th and York. They never picked up trash and never shoveled. This is a violation of LAW in New York City. The branch manager was well aware they were violating LAW and refused to comply stating a “lack of funds” – SURE – They have funds for whatever they want to have funds for. Sometimes they would hire people off the books from my building to pick up trash or shovel – sometimes they would not.
