eBay: Over a Million Zhu Zhu Searches Last Weekend

If you’re keeping score, eBay tells me that on Black Friday alone there were 350,000 searches for Zhu Zhu Pets, the holiday’s season’s hottest can’t-find must-have toy. On Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined, eBay customers purchased about 30,000 of the robotic hamsters and related items.

Zhu Zhu Pets, which retail for about $10 a hamster, are sold out nearly everywhere, leading parents to stalk Wal-Mart aisles because they heard rumors of a new shipment coming in, and also leading certain entrepreneurial types to ask as much as $7,000 for a mammoth set of Zhu Zhus on eBay.

Even with occasionally extortion-esque prices, eBay is still your best bet for snagging a Zhu Zhu according to this “Savings Experiment” video of a WalletPop blogger shopping for his daughter. The video is cringe-worthy in its corniness, though I did enjoy the Benny Hill-like fast-forward walking around Times Square and the occasional “boing” sound effects one expects from a wacky morning radio duo.
